Derrick Harriott, who has been around from the dawn of the Jamaican music industry, is Jamaica’s first-class singer and producer. His career started as a lead vocalist with a group called Jiving Juniors, and his early productions were released in United States. Later, the group contributed to early Studio One and Treasure Isle productions by recording many hits and as well as for his Crystal label.
Between 1962 and 1966, he was committed to release commercial songs such as ballads and pops instead of Rude boy music which were favored by streets. However. he started to record Rocksteady songs for himself and some others including Keith & Tex and those songs became instant hits while Rocksteady was at its peak. The label immediately shot to fame and released a lot of their productions and endorsed many artists. Along these artists, Derrick introduced Junior "Soul" Murvin, who made a international breakthrough with Lee Perry in 1970’s, and released his classics. Without stopping, he continued to release wonderful everlasting Rocksteady pieces.
When the Jamaican music enters into Reggae, he recorded many of mysterious instrumentals with Crystalites as well as his own soulful songs and early Reggae hits by artists like Augustus Pablo, Dennis Brown and Scotty. Amongst those many hits, Chosen Few, a group debuted in the Rocksteady era and led by Noel Brown, and Derrick Harriott’s his own funky Reggae Soul made huge impressions. Although the time shifted to Roots Reggae and now many artists were singing conscious songs with flashing their dreadlocks, Derrick Harriott himself always kept his Afro hairstyle and recorded soulful love songs. At the same time, he also recorded Roots Reggae songs such as ‘Rescue The Children’ by Junior "Soul" Murvin and this surely proves the label has been one of the foremost productions in the Jamaican music.
Derrick Harriott is definitely a magnate of the Jamaica music whom everyone recognizes. However, he always delights people pleasantly without being arrogant, we all know he is a humble gentleman.
If you have a chance to pass Half-Way Tree, Jamaica, you might want to visit his store, Derrick Harriott’s One Stop, located at Twin Gate Plaza so you will know he is one of great pioneers of Jamaican music and he is a true gentleman.

Side B) Junior Murvin (Junior Soul) - Rescue The Children Version |
Recorded in 1974, this is Junior Murvin's first Roots tune ever. Having always been sought after by collectors, this song is possibly the ultimate classic. This is a completely different take from the one Junior Murvin recorded for Lee Perry in 1977 for the “Police and Thieves” LP distributed by Island. Undoubtedly this is one of Murvin’s best tunes, which should be in every collector’s record box. |

Side A) Derrick Harriott - Some Guys Have All The Luck |
Side B) Kim Harriott - Just Want To Be Your Joy |
It is an obvious fact that Dreadlocks culture was the trend of the time when this tune was released, but how could we ever imagine Derrick Harriott wearing Dreadlocks? He was wearing Afro instead and showed how he could easily cover Persuaders’ Soul hit. The flip side features another cover of a US Soul track that was transformed to a sweet Lover’s Rock by Harriott’s relative, young Kim Harriott. Apparently Harriott’s surroundings at this time were all wearing Afro even if it was the Dreadlocks era. |

Side B) Derrick Harriott - Dancing The Reggae |
It was the Dreadlocks bandwagon in the mid 70’s, but Harriott, who started his career in the music business in the early 50’s, persisted his Afro hairstyle and his signature style of music, Reggae Soul and Lover’s Rock. At that time, music fans only approved serious Roots works but his music choices proved that his production was equally true and great Reggae music. Moreover his music brought to listeners a certain comfort, compared to the heavy weight Roots music that was mainly produced during this period. |
