Interview with Jil (Addis Record)

Hi Jiladdis! Tell us about your label

Addis Record, based in Geneva, Switzerland was created by two musicians in 1991 - myself Jil playing the keys & programming and Stuf who plays the bass and draws most of our designs. We started composing and producing instrumentals & dub tracks in the nineties, doing a lot of collaborations with veteran Jamaican musicians during our regular trips to Kingston, Jamaica. Some of those have been repressed by UK label Partial recently or available on our classic album “Kingston Sessions 1992-2002”. At that time when we were producing those we got good connection with young singers, artists and deejays from Kingston so it was a natural process to start producing them. We had released various riddim showcase albums between 2000-2007 and got tremendous supports with hits like “Bun Down Rome” by Natural Black, “We Shall Overcome” by Mark Wonder feat. Daddy Rings, “Faya Red” by Anthony B , “Behind It” by Chezidek to name a few. I have also worked on some of the projects myself without Stuf, as he also plays for another live band here in Geneva, a riddim album called “Solid Ground” was all recorded in Jamaica as well as “J.A Luv” and “My World”  which sound like more easy listening one drop. I can’t forget about the recently produced huge track with the talented singer Hezron entitled “Mobay”. In 2013, we released our second instrumental album named “Goulet Sessions 2003-2013” including the famous “Ghetto Blues” instrumental feat. Dean Fraser and “The Riddim the Rebel” instrumental. Followed by Nello B project album - he’s a Jamaican singer from Geneva. On this project I’ve collaborated with the mighty Russ Disciples. We also created a new 10 vinyl project that focuses on one particular artist - 3 titles have been released so far and we’ve also shot videos for the promotion, trying to push real artists and respect their personal influences on the choice of riddims and arrangements. Too many production project to present you! You can check my soundcloud for more.

Tell us about your latest release with Micah - they are both great by the way. We love it especially “In This Land”

Thanks a lot!! We first voiced the B side “Jah Works” it was I guess two years ago. Then Stuf voiced Micah when he was here in Geneva. It was his choice of the riddim as we have already released it as an instrumental. By the way big up original Gabre from the Kingston Dub Club. When Micah was done with the voicing, I did the arrange, added backing vocals and Russ Disciples mixed it. For “This Land” it took a little more time as we wanted to do something really rootical as Micah Shemaiah expressed by using 100% real musicians, mixing inna Jamaican style. That gave a good presentation, 2 sides of the artist & I really like the result. You can also check the video for “In this Land” on youtube too.

Your production style is broad - how do you describe your creation process?

Oh yeah thanks - trying to make things happened you know. As a musician, I love to work on different projects and when it sounds good I try to give them an official release. For the creation process it depends how much actors gonna be a part of it, together with Stuf we can produce 10 riddims a day…lol But we always try to push it higher, coming back for more musical arrangement and overdubbing you see.. I love when the riddim sounds complete and finished - to dub it seriously after…lol Always starting a new project with a midi demo that I build on my little studio, in the basement right here and try to grow the music as great as I can differently as we are an independent label.

What's in the pipeline for your label or your productions?

For Addis we have a new single with Hezron which is coming soon.. Hopefully the official release of a long awaited track too. More info soon to be dropped. We are also working on the release of the voiced version of our classic “Kingston Sessions” album. Everything is mixed already. Supposed to come out for end of this year. Several new instrumental tracks on the way too.. Also I’m producing riddims for other labels and work with some new comers from Jamaica & Geneva too. Thanks to you and to everyone who shows us love along the way!
