About Availability

Crucial recordings of the multifaceted Jamaican Music from the early 1960's. Funny and sharp, with the catchiest tunes – foundation music to move your feet!

Calypsos Down Jamaica Way is the significant piece to discover how Jamaican music, which was created by the fusion of the Jamaican indigenous Mento and popular Calypso. The album starts off with moody instrumental tune, 'Good Bye to Rome' that is perfectly harmonized by excellent performances of Sugar Belly's bamboo sax, Charlie Organaire's harmonica and banjo. Followingly, flute brows freely to pure Mento beat 'Go Fife Go'. Love song 'Yours' follows and Count Owen sings smoothly 'Lawd Some Men Could A Smart' to close the A-side.

The flip side of the album, Owen delivers the finest vocal with his specialty, cha-cha and Mento fusion in 'Careless Hands'. Other songs include 'Weed', 'Melody D'Amour' song being added a bit of European seasoning, 'Kingston Town' describes Kingston's moody atmosphere, Calypso style roots chanting 'Out The Fire', and a pure traditional Mento vocal on 'The Last Watch'. Throughout album, songs are rich in variety, and the technique of playing instruments is quite fluent. All songs are presented in high quality sound with Federal's highly equipped Hi-Fi technology.

Comparing to sound of the golden 50's, this album increased in easiness for listening as pop music, but it is never can be categorized as commercial music.
