Don Drummond - Rain Or Shine Take 2 / Rain Or Shine Take 3

Studio One / Dub Store Records JPN 1965

¥1580 (US$15.11)

Recorded at the height of the phenomenal carrier as the number one Ska band, these are never-released alternative takes of the ultimate instrumental Ska tune ‘Rain Or Shine’ by Skatalites and with respect, it should be called a product of miracle. Both are taken from the master tape. Recorded on the same session as ‘Last Call’ that Don Drummond was in charge, here we have two alternative takes of a seriously killer instrumental Ska which was featured as the introduction of the iconic Ska album “Ska Authentic Volume 2” Like ‘Freedom Sounds’ and other recordings made in the same period, the excavation and releasing of these tunes are much more important for Dub Store Records than the significance of the historic discovery of Pyramid! This is one extremely important and precious piece to complete the puzzle of the mystery of the late genius, Don Drummond and the magnificent tune for deep diggers of Reggae music. What a great Skatalites! What makes even cooler about this tune is that if you listen carefully for both sides, you will realize that each player is not playing a score at all; they all are improvising. It proves that they are undoubtedly the best Jamaican band of all time.

The 12" features on one side Mungo's Hi Fi's original dubby smasher, which has been one of their most requested tracks since they started playing it out on dubplate. The other side is their fi rst collaboration with Chimpo, who has pulled out all the stops to take the homage to Zinc's Super Sharp Shooter to the next level.

Derrick Harriott - Some Guys Have All The Luck / Kim Harriott - Just Want To Be Your Joy

Crystal / Wild Flower / Dub Store Records JPN 1974/ 1975

N/A

It is an obvious fact that Dreadlocks culture was the trend of the time when this tune was released, but how could we ever imagine Derrick Harriott wearing Dreadlocks? He was wearing Afro instead and showed how he could easily cover Persuaders’ Soul hit. The flip side features another cover of a US Soul track that was transformed to a sweet Lover’s Rock by Harriott’s relative, young Kim Harriott. Apparently Harriott’s surroundings at this time were all wearing Afro even if it was the Dreadlocks era.

Tommy115 All Stars - Rock Steady (Picture Sleeve) / Tommy115 All Stars, Dennis Bovell - Rock Steady Dub

115 Records JN 2015

N/A

I first met Tommy 115 in Japan 2014 during my Japan tour. I was very impressed with her love for Reggae Music .I could tell how much she loves great Reggae music. I'm not surprised that her new single titled "Rocksteady" sounding so great that I could tell that Tommy had learned the Art of good Reggae Music. Her choice of "Rocksteady" title is just the right name. The Recording is very good and the song has a Happy feeling, it puts you in a mood for Spring and Summer, it's a Holiday spirit. Nice song to have on your playlist. The Dub by Dennis Bovell makes you meditate on peace & love! Clive Wilson, Skatalites - One Ska, One Ounce Of Weed, One Beer / Federal Singers - Love Is All I Have

Federal / Dub Store Records JPN 1965

¥1580 (US$15.11)

Based on the Rhythm and Blues classic, this is a super rare uptempo Ska cover and for all Ska Man and the DJ’s!
Originally sung by Amos Milburn, in the 50’s this had been a sound system classic in Jamaica. There is nowhere else in the world but Jamaica could produce such a cover version and utterly convincing Drummond’s solo works nicely as a spice of this tune. Originally released on a blank label although it’s a super rare one to find - a proud copy to own and must have for all Ska Man. On the flip is a great vocal Ska yet the singer’s detail is completely unknown. *Recommended to pair this title with the instrumental version by Don Drummond on this very same series(DSR-FW7-04)

Soul Brothers - Shanty Town Curfew / Laxton Ford - Finders Keepers

Merritone / Dub Store Records JPN 1967

¥1380 (US$13.20)

From rudeboy era of the early Merritone label, this is an elegant and refreshing instrumental Ska backed with a rudeboy vocal in pre-Rocksteady style. The A-side is an unusual instrumental Ska recorded remarkably at the Federal studio by the Studio One’s iconic session band the Soul Brothers. The B-side is a debut song by Laxton Ford who only recorded a very few pieces during his career. The lyric is built upon proverbs, which is a popular theme amongst Jamaicans. Recorded directly from the master-tape.

Tartans - What You Gonna Do Now / Lynn Taitt, Jets - Pata Pata

Merritone / Dub Store Records JPN 1966

¥1380 (US$13.20)

The Tartans were like the 70’s reggae all-stars, and this is their early big hit along with a rare Lynn Taitt’s instrumental! Formed by Prince Lincoln, Cedric Myton and Devon Russell, the Tartans brilliantly represent the “oldies but goodies’”vibe on the A-side. Flipping over to the B-side is the Lynn Taitt’s interpretation of the Miriam Makeba’s hit tune. Mysteriously it’s been unknown if this rare piece has been put out as a single or still being unreleased.

Aubley Williams, His Orchestra - String Of Pearls / Granville Williams Orch. - Third Man Theme

GWO / Dub Store Records JPN 1965

¥1380 (US$13.20)

A wonderful, previously unreleased Jamaican Ska in one and only jazzy big band style. The length of this recording is slightly longer and all the solo parts are brightly emphasized. A rare piece with an adventurous development which is not quite typical for Jamaican music. A very fine Ska beat on the flip showcasing their original musicality. Also it is nice to see the appearance of Ernest Ranglin on both sides.

KC White - No No No (2nd Cut) / Dub (2nd Cut)

Soul Proff / Deeper Knowledge US 198-

You Don't Love Me (No No No)

N/A

Finally reissued, the murderous second cut of KC White's take on "No No No." A few years after his breakout 1973 tune, KC migrated to New York where he took up work at Brad's Record Den on White Plains Road in the Bronx, and began working at Bullwackie's nearby studio. It was around this time that he went back to JA and re-cut "No No No" in the updated 'rockers' style, heavier than before, and with the Heptones on harmonies. This tune was originally released as a 12" single on Brad's in-house Clocktower label, and never re-released since. Arguably better than his first take, if you like late '70s rockers this one is a must.

The Ras Michael & The Sons of Negus 12" features the long-desired Black Ark recorded & mixed tracks that were only ever issued on the very first pressing of the classic "Love Thy Neighbour" LP originally released on the Jah Life label. Finally reissued in all their glory on a crisp 12", these are some of the deepest roots reggae & nyabinghi tunes ever made.
